Reverend David Trexler
I'm one of those PKs (preacher kids), and while growing up I had no clue as to what I wanted to be.
There is one thing for certain I did not want to do or be, and that was a pastor.
I saw first hand all the hard work and grief my father went through, and thought to myself,
“Self, theres gotta be an easier way.” So following a brief stint in the USMC,
I set out to make my fortune and fame (well not fame, but at least fortune) as a steel broker.
It’s strange how life works, because after successfully striving for material things,
my life still felt empty.
One day sitting on the banks of a lake doing a little fishin’, the fish weren’t biting,
and I began reading from the gospel of Mark (probably because it is the shortest).
The story of Jesus calming the storm jumped off of the page and smacked me right across the face.
Hey, maybe I didn’t have to have all the answers — the disciples were with Jesus and they sure didn’t
seem to know what the heck was going on. Even with all my unanswered questions and doubts,
could I have enough sense to realize Jesus is in my boat?
A decision was made to enter the seminary, and for the past 10 years I have been doing
and being what I claimed I would never do or be.
Friends, that is the power of the gospel. And the power of the Word is what I focus upon each and every day.
To those who love Jesus and the stories of the Bible, I get such a thrill in teaching. To those who have never
heard the stories, I get goose—bumps having the opportunity to share with them the life—saving,
life—giving message of God found in Scripture.
So while I’m still not quite certain what I want to do when I grow up, for right now
I will just try and remember Jesus is in my boat calming those storms,
and I will continue to proclaim the fabulous stories of the Bible.
